MATTHEW CRAVEN
Through painting, drawing and collage my work explores both traditional and contemporary processes of re-appropriation and formal manipulation of images. Each piece is individual, meticulously crafted, and intimate in scale. Experimenting with these materials, systems and various installations, I am able to create a bizarre narrative that blends influences ranging from Baldesari and Ray Johnson to 80’s cartoon icon Cobra Commander.

My work is a systematic response to many questions I have about personal and Cultural identity, American History, and the appropriation of these ideals. My work transforms such traditionally formal decisions such as use of color and patterns into opportunities to create new characters, develop sub-plots, and convey new symbolic ideologies.
